republican leaders say the deal on the fiscal cliff took so much time, they >> ofour other big story tonight. a police chase ends in a deadly crash. shows what happened seconds after the crash. two people were killed this morning after a driver crashed into a liquor store in san francisco. all the victims are in their 20's. police say it all started when shots were fired at a nearby housing project kron 4's alecia reid has more on the investigation. >> reporter: while the remains of this car is being pulled away from the sidewalk, the damage done is horrific. >> the vehicle was thrown against the store and there was also in a pedestrian that was pronounced dead. >> the vehicle was thrown against the store. there was also a mid twenty year old pedestrian walking into the store, he was also pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: the passenger inside the car was also killed in an instant, and the driver is lying in the hospital with life threatening injuries. this all happened after police pulled over the driver of this black car. shots were fired near the valencia gardens public housing
complex and the car fit the description. but as officers walked over, he >> the guy was stopped, didn't wanna get caught, took off, and because of his trying to get away, crashed into another car and took out 2 lives right now. >> reporter: the suspect is in the hospital but is expected to be ok. just how fast he was going is yet to be determined. the major accident-investigation team was on site reconstructing the scene to figure it all out. police say they are familiar with the suspect and found a gun in his car. the gang task force is now sot - i have family that's walking these streets, im walking these streets and i with a gun. >> reporter: the victims names are being withheld until their live in san francisco alecia this just in. one of the people who was killed has been identified as 26-year-old francisco guiterez.
>> in san jose. a naked man armed with a samurai sword surrendered today - following a tense 3-hour standoff with police. we have video from sky 7 abc news. it shows the man trying to make a run for it as police moved in. he was shot with what police projectiles. he jumped a fence.and finally dropped the sword before being arrested. the man has been identified as charles bennett. >> he exited the vehicle with no clothes and he said you are going to have to kill me. he stated that several times. the officers called in for reinforcements. >> they show the sword in the assault rifle. police later showed reporters the sword and assault weapon taken from the man's truck. the man will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. he's being booked on charges of brandishing a sword and possession of an assault rifle.
>> in sacramento - two people were shot and killed in an incident that led to the cancellation of the city's fireworks show. a 22-year-old man is being questioned. police say there was a fight at a bar in old town sacramento. shots were fired when a security guard tried to intervene. a man and a woman were shot. police shut down the midnight fireworks display to conduct the investigation. >> catherine: new at 11. fairfield police say they wrapped up a crackdown on prostitution over the new year's eve weekend. they used several teams -- including the gang and narcotics unit. they targeted prostitutes using ads on the internet.. the websites were used to contact prostitutes and clients. 36 people were arrested. >> catherine: also new at 11. san francisco police are searching for two men who stole wigs from a store and punched a 75-year-old woman in the head after she confronted them. it happened on polk street. the woman refused medical treatment.. the suspects are described as being between 25 and 30
years old. >> jacqueline: we are in for a cold night. let us take a look at 30's through fairfield. 30's in sunnyvale. we are going to see very cold temperatures. the freeze morning for the entire north bay. the south bay and for the peninsula. temperatures in the 20's and 30's. just how cold it is going to be in your neighborhood >> catherine: a man drowns near point reyes.after trying to save his dog when it was swept out to sea. and it's been four years since oscar grant was shot and killed by a bart officer in oakland. how grant is being remembered.
>> catherine: the body of a man swept out to sea off point reyes was found today. this is video from sky 7 h- d rescuers were called in after a man, woman and dog the story. >> reporter: just after noon on new years day, the coast guard received reports that a man and woman walking a dog along pt. reyes beach had been caught by what was described as a rouge wave. the woman and the dog were able to swim ashore with the help of people who saw what happene, but the man was swept to sea. the coast guard and the california highway patrol launched a rescue effort and searched for several hours. but arounnd 4pm, they found his body adrift in he's described as a 59 year old male and his identity has not yet been released. the woman was examined by paramedics, but unijured.
>> catherine: this is the four year anniversary of the shooting of oscar grant. he was the unarmed bart passenger shot and killed by police. it happened at the fruitvale bart station in 2009. this is video from a cell phone - taken just before the shooting. today - grant's family and about a hundred supporters held a vigil at the station. >> we want the world to fall in love with oscar grant how the struggle. they say they want to keep grant's name and memory alive. >> we want the world to fall in love with oscar. it is our hope that the world will begin to see young african american men that struggles in life just like everybody else, have a right to live. >> catherine: the family has turned the anniversary of grant's death into a crusade protesting officer involved shootings. grocery stores in alameda county are now charging customers for paper bags. that follows the ban on plastic bags.. kron 4's reggie kumar tells us how people feel about it.

>> grocery store is are participating in this program. in alameda, kron 4 news. >> catherine: survivors of a weekend bus crash on an oregon highway are collecting their passports so they can return home to canada. today - police officers allowed people to pick up their belongings. which were strewn across a hillside. sunday - their tour bus crashed on an icy road. the red cross says a lot of get on another bus. so a nearby car dealer offered vehicles for the drive home. at least 14 people are still hospitalized in three states. the crash killed nine - and injured 38 others. >> new at 11. a new study says that people who are slightly overweight might live a little longer.. the study published in the journal of the american medical association looked at three million adults around the world. it compared body mass to the risk of death. people with a little extra weight had a six-percent lower risk of dying - compared to people of "normal" weight.

called again. we will start to see a shift in our winds with warmer afternoon. temperatures will continue for the weekend. >> catherine: the first baby of the new year in the bay area was born at midnight in antioch. and another twist to the story - the boy was delivered by his great- grandmother. kron four's jeff bush has a story that spans four generations. >> reporter: maternaty ward doctors deliver thousands of babies in the course of their career but few can say they have delivered their grandchildren. but what about a half dozen grandchildren? great grandmother >> i have eight grandkids and i delivered seven of those and i have three great grandkids and i delivered all three of those. >> reporter: including her newest great grandkid. meet harley daniel sparks. he was born on the stroke of midnight at the sutter delta medical. harley's mom, kara was a bit tired from ten hours of
labor but was excited and overjoyed at harley's arrival into this world. >> it's a blessing and it's really cool. i love it. the feeling, i can't explain the feeling but i already love him so much. >> reporter: harley's dad had that stunned look that all new fathers have and his words of love for his new son were pure and true. harley sparks >> i'm happy, really happycouldn't ask for anything better than a perfect baby. >> reporter: a perfect baby boy. the hospital staff says he already has a healthy appetite and good color. kara says having her grandmother in the delivery room was a reassuring feeling while having her first baby. happy that she was the one
